Careers Education at The Becklands School
High-quality careers education and guidance is critical to young people’s futures. It helps prepare them for the workplace by providing an understanding of the world of work. This enables students to make informed choices about their pathways and improve their life opportunities.

Our Commitment to Careers Education
At The Becklands, we aim to support all our students to become as autonomous and independent as possible, making positive contributions to society in their own way.
Every learner will have opportunities to learn about and understand the world of work in a way that is appropriate to their age and stage of development. All classes take part in our ‘5 Strands Days’, which allow us to meet our commitment to provide engagement with employers and the world of work in the most appropriate way for our learners.
For Key Stage 4 and Post-16, our curriculum includes specific teaching related to transition, next steps, and careers. Work experience is embedded into the Post-16 curriculum for all students.
Learning and Support
- Individual Careers Guidance: Students in Key Stage 4 and Post-16 receive individual careers/next step interviews to discuss aspirations and choices for the next phase of education.
- IAG Visits: We host termly visits from the Local Authority’s Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) service, ensuring students receive tailored support.
- Post-16 Support: We work closely with the Post-16 team at East Riding to provide additional guidance and opportunities.
- College Application Workshops: Learners wishing to attend college take part in a 6-week, 1:1 college application workshop to support them with their next steps.
- Employer Engagement: We welcome visits from local businesses to deliver talks and demonstrations, giving students real-world insights.
- Events and Visits: Students are encouraged to attend careers fairs, open days, and visit potential next placements as part of the curriculum.
- Work experience placements: All learners are supported to attend work experience placements and or alternative provision which supports their next steps

We encourage students and families to use Log On Move On – a comprehensive platform for exploring post-16 options, apprenticeships, and training opportunities.
Our Careers Programme
Our full careers programme is designed to:
- Provide age-appropriate careers education across all key stages.
- Offer practical experiences of work and employer engagement.
- Support students and families with realistic and personalised advice.
- Ensure every student has access to independent careers guidance.
Students can request additional support at any time by speaking to staff in school. Parents and carers are welcome to contact us via Dojo, phone, or email for further information or referral to the IAG service.
