PROGRAMME OF STUDY FOR ENGLISH
KEY STAGES 3-4
At The Becklands, we want our all our students to leave us as effective readers, writers and communicators who have been exposed to a wide variety of literature and text-based material. We strive to develop a positive reading ethos through a rich and varied curriculum which challenges students to think and ask questions about their lives and the lives of others. We want our students to leave us with the knowledge and skill to communicate effectively both in writing and speaking so that they may confidently go on to career paths of their choice.
All our LTPs follow the aims of the National Curriculum which aims to ensure that students:
- Read easily, fluently and with good understanding.
- Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
- Acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
- Appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.
- Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
- Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.
- Are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
