ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMME OF STUDY FOR MATHEMATICS
The purpose of this programme of study is to ensure that every pupil, whatever their background, prior attainment, or academic attainment prior to starting at the Becklands School is fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and well prepared for their next steps. Our approach supports pupils to form solid foundations for future mathematical learning, whether that be at Springwell or in their next school or setting, before moving to an accredited pathway. To do this, we prioritise key concepts or ‘blocks of learning’ for all our secondary pupils. Once pupils have demonstrated a depth of understanding in each of the introductory blocks, pupils follow the broader scheme set out by White Rose Maths.
White Rose Maths breaks the curriculum down into small manageable steps that help students to understand key concepts. Each block of content has a “small step” breakdown. It is not the intention that each small step should last a lesson – some will be a short step within a lesson, some will take longer than a lesson. Teachers are supported to spend the appropriate amount of time on each step for their pupils, and to teach some of the steps alongside each other if necessary.
