KEY STAGES 1-2

Intent

We aim to create confident readers, writers and thinkers who can use language to express themselves and their world around them. Literature and language are at the forefront of our curriculum, and we believe that a text-based English Curriculum at KS1/2 enables and empowers students to live the best possible lives. Therefore, we make it a priority to build our students’ ability to read and speak confidently whilst also developing their access to and confidence with high-quality texts. We believe that all our students deserve access to age-related texts which challenge them and expose them to big ideas, thus developing their understanding of literary forms, wider knowledge of the world, empathy for the human experience and language competency. We place a high emphasis on quality picture books and non-fiction as well poetry and contemporary fiction. It is essential to us that we both support and challenge our students through scaffolding their work and placing a high emphasis on oracy. We also use out text-based approach to contextualize our teaching of language, grammar, phonics and spelling; enabling children to work at greater depth in both reading and writing.

Implementation

Our curriculum covers the different areas of reading and writing both fiction and non-fiction. The sophistication of the skills and knowledge gradually increase each year and this is carefully mapped by the subject lead. The curriculum is based around the CLPE Power of Reading Teaching Approaches and this supports some of our non-specialist staff to offer a rich and supportive curriculum. Texts and high-quality and age related, but the teachers are responsible for scaffolding and tailoring these lessons for their classes and ensuring the right level of challenge. This ensures that students across different sites are having the same learning offer and it also helps to develop and support non-subject-specialist staff to acquire the right level of challenge for their classes.
